Question

Is it necessary to backup the IDX Files?

asked on April 21, 2014

This is more of a curiosity question...but I'm just wondering if it's necessary to backup the .idx files that are in the Repository?  I know typically, when you migrate to server, you have to recreate the catalog, so I'm just curious if it's necessary to backup these files, or if I can just re-create the catalog in the event I need to restore the Repository.

Thanks!!

It is not necessary to backup the .idx files because they can be easily recreated as you have mentioned. This can save you storage space and make your backups faster. The other side is how fast do you want to be able to look things up after a backup is restored? If you have a large repository, it could take hours (or even days) to re-index the repository. If that is not a problem, then I would not back up the .idx files and just recreate them.

How important is full-text search to the organization's business?  Can they wait for the indexes to be rebuilt?  Some people use search heavily while others don't, so if you want to justify not backing them up on a cost-benefit basis you'll really have to be familiar with their usage patterns and what efficiencies they gain from the system.

If the organization has a formal disaster recovery plan it probably specifies the amount of time by which all systems must be returned to full functionality.  In that case, you'll probably lean towards backing them up unless you're sure that indexing can be completed in the allowed time. Remember that indexing time increases as the repository gets bigger, so even if you think you have enough time today you still have to revisit this question periodically to make sure your decision is still the right one.

If you are going to back up the index, make sure that the VSS Writer service is running. Otherwise, the index will end up being corrupted.
