Many Wait for entry change impact

We are scanning document images using MFPs and Import Agent and indexing does document by entering some metadata and workflows are taking care of populating the remaining fields. These workflows are initiated by moving the documents to a specific folder. 

 

Would it be possible to have a workflow kicked off when the entry is create and have a few different steps waiting for entry changes? 

 

How would it impact the workflow server if I had hundreds, maybe thousands of entries in that state?

Yes, that's possible. Workflow will queue up the entries and processes them. It wouldn't be any slower than starting workflows from moving thousands of documents into the specific folder. Information about waiting entries is saved in the database, not kept in memory, so it wouldn't affect the performance of the server.
