TextProvider process terminated when attempting to extract text from PDF

asked on April 9, 2014 Show version history

I am getting the following error in our 9.1.1 system:

The TextProvider process was terminated due to an unhandled exception when extracting text from a document. Search catalog: TEST. Entry ID: 753924. This is usually caused by a problematic IFilter or a corrupted document. Please install a proper IFilter and see if it solves the problem. You can also skip the problematic type of electronic documents by modifying the BlockedExtensions list in registry.

The entry provided (and the numerous others listed in the event viewer on the server) is a PDF. The iFilter from adobe has been installed and repaired at least once. These warnings re-appear when I reindex the repository.

What can I do to have our system read text from PDFs properly?

There are widely reported issues with Adobe's v11 ifilter. Please uninstall that and install the v9 ifilter.

Should I uninstall Adobe Reader 11 from the server?

Having Adobe Reader itself installed is fine. Just remove the v11 ifilter and install the v9 ifilter.

I am having the same issue, however, I don't see that ifilter is installed??   How do I remove ifilter as it's not listed in Add/Remove Program Files??

You do need an iFilter installed, it's just that the v11 one doesn't work. The point of uninstalling v11 is to install the v9 iFilter, so if v11 isn't present, just go ahead and install v9.

Installing v9 seems to have resolved the errors.

What version of Laserfiche are you using? Is it 9.1.1 SP1? Also, can you confirm that the entry ID from the error message references a PDF?

You may want to contact your Laserfiche reseller to open a support case so the issue can be more thoroughly investigated. We'd also need the actual PDF that's being referenced.

Hi,

Version 9 of the adobe ifitler pack is not available any more looking at the website - are there any alternatives to this?

I got the same issue, i cannot find Adobe iFilter v9 or Adobe Reader v9, anyone out there has it?

It is available on Adobe FTP site: ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win

9.5.0 en-US version is available on ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/9.x/9.5.0/en_US/

The IFilter installed with Adobe Reader 7 can be three times faster than the IFilter in Adobe Reader 9. You may also want to try that.

Hello, I am getting the same error. They are on LF 9.2. Would uninstalling iFilter 11 and installing ifilter v9 resolve my issue? If so, can you please provide me access to your ftp to download it?

Hi,

I've been researching this recently for a 10.3 customer of ours and have found the v11 iFilter can cause the 'problematic iFilter' error in Event log.

This posting suggested to try v9 instead and I can confirm this worked for me.

The link I used is below.  After installing the v9 iFilter and restarting the LF Full Text Search service the Advanced PDF use iFilter option extracted the text successfully from a digitally produced PDF without the space overhead and additional CPU processing to generate LF thumbnail image pages for thousands of delivery notes.

ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/acrobat/win/9.x/PDFiFilter64installer.zip

Hope this helps others with similar issue.

Does anyone have a copy of the version 9 PDF iFilter installer or another PDF iFilter that works with Laserfiche they would be willing to share? The version 11 PDF iFilter does not work.

Adding this is still occurrs with LF v11 vanilla install, v9 iFilter is needed (we also used ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/acrobat/win/9.x/PDFiFilter64installer.zip from Warren's original post above)

We saw Event ID 33566 (Error message The TextProvider process was terminated due to an unhandled exception when extracting text from a "pdf" document. Search catalog: xx. Entry ID: 123456. This is usually caused by a problematic IFilter or a corrupted document. Please install a proper IFilter...)

End Users saw Error 9008 in client (Event ID 197 SQL timeout) as Full Text Index service was chewing up ~95% memory on server

If my LFFTS is on a separate server than the LFS, where is the best place for the Abode 9 iFilter to get installed?

I have been unable to get any of the download links to work. Does anyone happen to have an updated link?

I think I googled it. It installed just like Acrobat Reader. Might be able to just do that, but not 100%.
