Question

Web Access Scanning Blocked

asked on April 7, 2014

We have a client with a strict domain policy in effect.  They are able to log onto Web Access, but when they click on scan, they get a "Unable to open this helper application for...../App_Services/ScanningService.asmx.  The protocol specified in this address is not valid. Make sure the address is correct and try again.

Their domain policy blocks all .exe calls unless they're defined in the allow list, which they have done for LFScan.exe installed on the local machine.  If they turn off this domain policy, then scanning works fine with no problems.  But they need to keep this policy in effect.  The WA server is not on their domain.  The website has been added to the Trusted Sites list.

What else needs to be allowed in order to be able to launch scanning successfully?

Web Access invokes Scanning via a URL with a custom protocol, "lfwa80://...", and there's a small .exe that gets installed along with Web Scanning that handles these requests and launches Scanning.  It should be located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Laserfiche\System\lfwa80.exe.  You might see if adding this to the "allow" list will allow Scanning to launch (I believe you'll also still need to allow LFScan.exe).

Hi Andrew!

Yes, that was it!  Once they allowed it scanning launched successfully.

Thank you very much! :)

Hi Andrew,

Could you please let me know how to add to "Allow" list?

This will depend on what software you are using to implement the whitelist - it's not something that Laserfiche software controls.  For instance, this documentation covers AppLocker.
