Quickfield Session using ZoneOCR not recognizing letters correctly; Very incosistent

asked on April 4, 2014

I have a set up a quickfield session to capture zoned areas off of an invoice.  The Invoice is very clear in quality, sometimes it will pick up the characters correctly and other times it picks them up as completely different characters using the exact same invoice that previously worked correctly.  Example:  It will pick up the letter O as open and closed parenthesis () and a 1 as the letter l; those are just a few examples of the inconsistency.  Any suggestions?

You can configure the Zone OCR Optimization to use "Accuracy" instead of "Balanced" which may help.

When you click on a scanned document in the revision pane it will show the Resolution and DPI in the lower right corner. What are those numbers?

Chances are if you zoom in very close on the image there are issues with the text. There are some ways to help improve it though. First, you can change the optimization level on the OCR to accuracy. You can also use image enhancements (smooth may help in your situation).

If you know the type of text you expect to receive (ie Numbers or Letters) in the Zone OCR Advanced Options you can give it a character preference. If certain issues are routinely coming up you can use substitution to replace them (if your parentheses issue is coming up often add a substitution of 0 for ()). There will actually be a tech tip in an upcoming VAR news on this topic so keep an eye out for that.

Here is the tech tip I mentioned on improving OCR results.

Chad,

Thanks for your response.  I have a screen shot of one of the sessions.  I have highlighted some of the areas that it is picking up incorrectly.

To understand how Quick Fields is processing it try zooming all the way into the image:

You can see the / and 2 are pretty much touching, which is messing up the OCR. You can try adding a "smooth", but while the image quality looks good to the naked eye it isn't as robust as you'd like it for Quick Fields.

I have change the Zoned Region settings to accuracy.  I have also change the Advanced Options to read Letters.  Still inconsistent.

Hi,

I am trying to use zone OCR on a form and the zone contains 2 lines of text. I have attached the screen capture, so you can get a better idea of what we're trying to scan. My question is can the zone-ocr read both these lines (orientation as well as #100) because whenever I test the process, it seems like it gets only the first line. How can I fix this? Any other processes I should be using instead?

Regards,

Shraddha

Judy,

Do you have any other processes that run after that one?  Like a page removal or anything like that?  Or is the Zone OCR the only process that runs on that document?

John
