pros and cons of web access vs windows client

posted on March 29, 2014

Hi Folks,

Just finished installing the latest version of Rio for a new organization. I'm wondering about deploying the desktop client, or strictly remaining with web access only for about 70 users... Any opinions out there from experienced users on both side of the fence?

How have you handled access in regards to client/web.

Thanks

T

Hi Tom, Chris and Tessa,

Thanks for the doc, Tessa.

I'm planning a complex implementation at the moment and plan to use LF Client for the post room and Web Client for the consumers, presented as an iframe in Dynamics.

For myself, I prefer LF Client when I have a lot of documents to index, such as my expenses.

To review my expenses, through Quick Books Online, I use LF Connector and Web Client. When one-the-road, I use Web and Mobile Clients.

I find the side-by-side comparison of features interesting but for productivity, simple features, such as having a "next document" button to reduce clicks is very handy.

Both clients have their place for me. I'm going to try to switch to Web Client eventually, given that's where all the new functionality is heading.

What about everyone else?

Laserfiche has now published a comparison of the Laserfiche clients, which you can download at:

Hi Tom,

We have many customers some ranging from 5-10, others 200+ but it's generally down to personal preference and what works best for you/the organization.

Until recent versions things that have been lacking in the web client is the office plug-in and the ability to OCR. The office plug-in is now an install and OCR is now possible in WA using the Laserfiche Distributed Processing elements.

Having said that I personally would always go with the full 'thick' client. Having seen a variety of IIS based applications I think my confidence in this way of working has been dented slightly. With the ability for a 'silent install' of the full client I don't see any reason for using Web Access over the full client. Web Access is perfect for remote locations/satellite offices but for a direct LAN connection to the LF server I would always choose the full client over WA any day of the week.

Again this is just my fifty pence on the subject and everyone is entitled to an opinion. This is mine :)

Hope this helps Tom!
