Question

Create PDF from inside Laserfiche

asked on March 20, 2014

In Windows explorer I can right click a document and convert it to a PDF in one easy step. Can this same functionality be done within Laserfiche to create a new PDF with a similar name and in the same folder? We have Acrobat Pro XI on all our workstations.

The right-click and convert to PDF functionality in Windows comes from Adobe Acrobat, as well as some other third-party PDF printers. It is not a native Windows function.

In Laserfiche, the only way to convert a document to PDF is to export it as a PDF and re-import it. We have received requests to enable direct conversion, but an actual use case (i.e. scenarios in which it would be used) would be good to have. smiley

Ok Ege, after playing with it a bit more, I see that if you export as an image (there is no actual PDF option listed) and select PDF from the dropdown, I can save a document (or handily, multiple documents) in PDF format on my desktop and then drag them back into the same folder in Laserfiche.  This is fairly quick unless the user wants to convert a very large number of files.  The time it takes to do all this is minimal, so perhaps building this functionality right into Laserfiche is unnecessary.  Thank you for your quick reply.

I know it has been a while since 2014, but have not been able to find any better threads on this or updates that more recent versions support this.  Here is our use case:

We have a large number of remote operations on vehicles spread around the world with no MS office suite installed on many of them.  Our operators all have software to view PDF's, but not word documents or the like.  We do this so that they cannot change a procedure for their convenience or because they don't like something, but rather have to request changes through the proper channels.  We are then saving it locally as a PDF as noted above and uploading it as the latest version.  This gives our operators the latest version in a format they cannot edit, but gives us the records to make the edits in the future.  To automate this, we are looking at having workflow kick it to third party software and then pass it back, but would prefer to do it natively.

Thanks!
