Question

Workflow to name new documents using tokens from parent folder?

asked on March 19, 2014 Show version history

I would like to create a workflow rule that uses tokens from the parent folder template fields and a template field (Doc Type) from the new document that is being imported.

Example:

A user imports (drag and drops) a document into the folder where they want to store the document. When the Import Document window opens, they simply select the document type from a drop down list field. Then, a workflow would run (triggered on new document created) that uses specific field tokens from the parent folder and the token from the doc type field on the starting entry to rename the document.

Sounds easy but I can't seem to find a way to get to the parent folder entry in order to retrieve the fields.

Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks again,

Eric

The easiest way to get the parent folder is to to a find entry with the "at" option and put in the token for your path. This makes the parent folder available to your workflow so you can retrieve the fields from it.
