Is it possible to configure web access to use native file viewers for electronic documents ?

We have a customer which would really like to open the electronic documents in the native file viewer rather than downloading it. Is there a way to identify what the document type actually is, and then customise web access to embed the native application, i.e. Adobe Reader, Word ...

Not currently. It's definitely on our desired feature list, although it's too soon to be able to attach it to a timeline.
