Question

Using Volumes Best Practices

asked on March 11, 2014

We're upgrading from LF 7 to 9 and are looking for a quick and dirty list of best practices for using volumes from a management standpoint.  We have just one location and server.  Let's assume that in this scenario, we are talking about a repository that has 2 volumes. Here are some questions to give you an idea what kinds of tips we're looking for:

1. We found that after import, no default volume is set for anything.  Is there a way to set the default volume recursively for all child objects of a given folder?

2. What are the ramifications if a folder has files that have documents saved across multiple volumes?

3.  It is wise to split the root directory's folders half in one volume and half in another or fill up one volume before the next?

The volumes introduction and best practices whitepaper is a great first resource.  Generally you design volumes to help processes like backup and retention, so it's hard to answer your questions without a lot more information about what you are trying to accomplish.
