Question

Workflow stuck on Running Stage

asked on March 9, 2014

 Hi all,

An instance of a workflow got stuck on Running Stage. When I opened the properties inside Workflow Designer there was no error messages, no Waiting Conditions and the Activity was highlighted in Blue Color.

I went to the Workflow Admin Console and there was no Waiting Conditions attached to it. I had to Terminate it and start it again.

I have even checked the Workflow Events and Windows Events to make sure that no problem had occurred outside Laserfiche.

Anybody has come across this situation before?

Any ideas on what might have caused this issue, and how to troubleshoot it?

Thanks in advance,

Andres

In general, they usually are things that are expected errors, like 'Entry Locked' which will make workflow retry in 5 minutes.

Each error retries up to 50 times by default.

My guess you updated this stuck WF Instances while it was running at some point.

Did you check Workflow Admin Console: "Current Error Log: activity error.logs"? Is there any error like Error Object reference not set to an instance of an object?

Hi Ali,

No errors. Still don't know why it happened.

I fixed it by going to the Workflow Designer, then properties of the running instance, then Task Tab.

Inside this screen there is a Retry link. Clicked this link and this made the workflow to continue.

Most likely your workflow hit one of the 'retryable' errors that can occur. If you remember the message that the task tab showed (also there may be a warning in the workflow), you can view the admin console to see the retry period on that particular error type and modify it if it feels too long for you.

Thanks Ed.

Do you know what may cause the workflow to hit those 'retryable' errors (is there is a known issue)?

If i change the retry period for the errors from the Workflow Admin Console, does it retry just once or indefinitely?

Your answer has been very helpful.
