I want to allow a group to browse and view documents if a field has a certain value. So basically this group would be able to browse and view documents with a certain field value even if they do not have access to the folders that those documents are in. I have a field called 'document type'. I want this group of users to be able to browse and view documents with a specific 'document type' only.

Unless I am not understanding correctly, I think you could use folder filter expressions in some way, though they would need access to the folder. You could use this to limit their access to certain documents based on field value. Have you looked at that?
