Question

Folders - Slow To Open

asked on February 28, 2014

I have one client (Windows 7 Pro. 64Bit - fully patched) running Laserfiche 9.1.1.486.  When he clicks on a folder, it often takes 5 - 10 seconds for the subfolders to appear.  Other users don't experience this delay.

This issue also occurred with the previous version of Laserfiche.

Has anyone else experienced this particular issue?

Thank you,

Jason,

For the affected user, log into the Client and go to Tools > Options > Reset > General and click the "Restore" button to restore default settings. Then restart the Client and see if that addresses the issue.

If I remember correctly, the Pages and OCR'ed Pages columns slow the retrieval process a lot.

How complex is the access right setup for this user? Do other users that have the same security setup have this delay? Is he displaying many columns in the browser? Try removing all columns and see if that makes a difference.

This particular user has full access (Administrator) in terms of security rights.  I'll have to check around to see what other "power users" have for security rights.

I'll also check on what columns are being displayed.

Hopefully I'll get back with some answers before the day is over.

Here's something interesting...  So when I log in as another user, or Administrator, on the computer experiencing the issue, Laserfiche behaves as it ought to - folders open almost immediately.

When the user who is having the issue logs in on the same computer using either Windows Authentication, or his Laserfiche assigned username/password the problem still occurs - folders take ~5 - 10 seconds to open.

Any other suggestions, or ideas?  I understand this users security settings may be a fault, but this is purely speculation.

Scenarios where the only difference is that the user is changed (especially on the same computer) generally indicate a security difference somewhere. Perhaps there are extra checks being made for the user in question that isn't present for others. Does that user have the bypass filter expression privilege unchecked while the other users have it? Bypass Browse? That's the type of thing I would check for.

Hello Justin:

I unchecked the "bypass filter expression", and "bypass browse" for the user, but doing so didn't seem to have an effect.  Maybe a PC restart is required....

Following your advice, next Monday I'll see if I can iteratively adjust these settings, and narrow down what settings are causing this particular users folders to open so slowly.

I hope you have a terrific weekend.

Thank you,

Hey Blake:

I forgot to add to my previous post that only the "Pages" column was present (by default).  But this doesn't seem to impact the responsiveness of opening folders when other users log onto the PC having issues.

Thank you,

Have you tried disabling the Pages column though for this user? I wouldn't count it out until you try it.

Hey Blake:

No joy on the removing the "Pages" column....  To bad, as this would have been an easy fix smiley

Hello Alexander:

This fixed the issue!!

I'm not sure which non default setting was configured to cause the folders to open so slowly, but the "restore" button fixed the issue.  Now the user can now open folders as quickly as the other users.

If you understand what may have initially caused this issue, please let me know.

Thank you,

Jason Wagenaar

I'm not clear on the specific setting that may have caused the slowness, but can you provide us with the backed up .xml and .reg files that were created when the user's settings were restored to their defaults? The two files should be located in C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Laserfiche

I'll try to get you these files after lunch today.  Would you prefer that I upload these files to this post, or would you prefer that I email you these files directly?

If you prefer to use email, would you mind letting me know your email address?

Jason,

The issue seems to be related to users who have the Tools > Options > Browser > General, "Remembered for each individual folder" option enabled and have accumulated many (i.e. thousands of) different folder layouts. In 9.1, we use a new attribute layout to store that information so the conversion of this from 9.0 caused the performance issue.

I've filed an SCR to improve the Client's browsing performance when a user has that many remembered folder layout.

Regards
