Feature Request: Process Modeler Templates

asked on February 27, 2014 Show version history

A lot of the BPs that I work on have completely different forms and names, but the process has a lot of the same tasks. It would be useful if we could create templates that could be saved and loaded into the Process Modeler. Another idea would be to export and import just the Process Modeler instead of the entire BP.

EDIT: After thinking about this a little more, it might make more sense to make a snippet that could be saved and then inserted from a menu option in the Process Modeler. So I could create certain tasks in the Process Modeler, select those tasks and have a button to save those tasks as a snippet and name it. When I'm working on another BP and need that snippet of tasks, I could simply choose it from a snippet menu and it would insert into my current Process Modeler.

The feature as you describe it is not available. As others have mentioned, making use of the process template feature might get you close to what you're looking for. We'll keep the specific use case in mind for future development. Thanks, Blake!

Actually, Another user posted this:

You can also create your templates from your existing processes. These templates include the original business process’ configured process model and forms.

To create a custom template:

  1. From the Manage page, select the business process you want to use as a template.
  2. Export the business process by clicking Export in the toolbar. The process will be exported as an XML file and it will be saved in your Downloads folder.
  3. Move the XML file into the following location on the Forms server: C:\Program Files (x86)\Laserfiche\Laserfiche Forms\Forms\Template.
  4. To use the template you’ve just created, follow the steps outlined in the “To use a business process template” section above.

Pretty sure you can already define a BP Template. Have you checked the help files?

You can export or import the entire BP. What I am proposing is just the Process Modeler portion of the BP.

What you can do is make a few forms with the process modeler being the only customization and then just copy it whenever you start a new process and rename it.

Not sure, but you definitely should be able to use the template folder as a way to store new templates.

Should be something like this: C:\Program Files (x86)\Laserfiche\Laserfiche Forms\Forms\Template

The files are in XML. I wouldn't be surprised if they are essentially exported BP's with no forms assigned in them.

I'm assuming the same would be true if I wanted to reuse one of the following?

1) A pre-defined template for creating a new form, and

2) A section that had been created previously (e.g. we have a FOIP statement as a section in most of our forms, and we'd like to be able to save this for reuse/insertion later)

If this is a totally separate thread, please let me know, and I'll create a separate question.
