Question

Is it quicker to export a briefcase or export volumes for moving data?

asked on February 26, 2014

Customer wants to clean up their repository, so we're going to do some work for them on some of the folders...and just curious if it's quicker to export a Breifcase of the folders, or Export a volume?  Before we can export the volume we'd have to migrate everything to the same volume.

Thanks!!

In terms of performance of the actual operation, exporting a volume should be faster than exporting a briefcase because it doesn't involve sending all of the data in the folders to the client machine. Moreover, if you set the volume export path to the actual path of the volume, the server won't even copy volume files. You could then create an archive of the volume directory and move that to another location, decompress it, and import it to a new server.

That said, the total amount of work to do this might be more than to export a briefcase. Exporting a briefcase lets you simply export a Laserfiche folder straight to a file, whereas you have the add the time to migrate all of your entries to the same physical volume to the time taken to export a volume, and then afterwards you're left with a folder which may or may not serve your purposes for moving it to a new location (for instance, e-mailing a folder is tricky). In the end, deciding which process to use depends on a variety of factors.

  • If you already have physical volumes that correspond exactly to the data that you want to export, export the volumes.
  • If you can easily migrate all of your entries to the correct physical volumes, export the volumes.
  • If your entries are all spread across a lot of different volumes, weigh the difficulty of migrating them to the correct volumes against the extra time needed to send all of the data in your briefcase to the client.
  • If you don't have access to the Volumes themselves (I presume this is not your situation, just including it here for completeness), export a briefcase.
