We are doing searches. The user types in a partial basic search like '*12345*' and finds document shortcuts in folders that they do not have access to. We checked all the document and folder security and the active directory and LF groups that they belong to and they do NOT have security to the folders where the desktop shortcuts are stored, yet these shortcuts appear in their search. If they click on the shortcut, they are not able to access the document which is good. But the mere fact that the shortcut shows up in the search is of concern. In another experiment we placed the desktop shortcut to a document that they did have security again in a location in the repository that they did not have access to. Sure enough the search listed the desktop shortcut and when they clicked on it they were able to bring up the document (which in this case they should have access to the document). So it seems that basic searches are ignoring the security access for desk top shortcuts. Any idea why?

Right click on the shortcut in the search results, select "Open Containing Folder" and see if that opens a new Client window showing the folder that contains that specific shortcut. If it does, then it means the user has access to that folder. You can try viewing the effective rights the current connection has on that folder to confirm.
Some other things you may want to make sure of is that the user in question doesn't have the bypass browse privilege. Also make sure the user isn't a member of a group that may have that privilege.
