Question

Question

I want two separate WebLink sites; do I create an application or virtual directory in IIS?

asked on February 24, 2014

The help files and white paper say to create a virtual directory in IIS. In the past, I've always created a new application in IIS. In this question (

, they also created a new application.

I'm wondering why the discrepancy? Does it have to do with how IIS treats applications and virtual directories differently in IIS 6 vs IIS 7? Are the help files/white paper incorrect?

In IIS 6 and earlier, you couldn't create new applications, just new virtual directories. The two terms are basically synonymous in IIS 6. In IIS 7 and later, you have the option to add additional web applications (due to the hierarchy changes) so that's the proper option to use. See this page for additional information between the terminology differences in IIS 6 and 7.
