Question

Looking for a solution for stitching Laserfiche images of maps back together

asked on February 24, 2014

We are currently in the midst of a large scale scanning project.  We have begun to scan large scale paper maps into LF that are within the files.  The requester wants each of these maps stitched back together?    I'm looking for a solution, as to how we can best perform this task?  What program would we use?    Any recommendations for guidance on this would be appreciated.

Thanks

Gwendolyn,

A couple of questions; How are you doing the scanning of the large scale paper maps?  When you say 'stitched' back together do you mean producing a large image file from a group of smaller images?  If so, are the large image files going to remain in LF or are they getting exported back out to be used outside of LF?

The more detail you can provide the better!

The scanning of the large scale paper maps is being performed a page a time (fold and unfold)  until the entire map is scanned, thus creating smaller images.  These smaller images will need to be 'stitched' or joined back together thus producing the original map.  Our goal is to keep the image in LF.

Hmmm.  Have you seen the results of the page scanning process?  I would assume that with this method there is going to be some image loss and/or distortion at the periphery of each image (due to folding the larger map) that would impact the quality of any image that was stitched back together using the smaller images.

If it's not too late; have you considered going to a large format scanning service?  Maybe something at Staples or perhaps a blueprint reproduction company (or even a local copier vendor that might have large format scanners?)

If you do decide to go the small image scan route a couple of options I have seen used are Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft ICE.  Both will take a group of images and allow you to stitch them together.  The Microsoft product is offered free at this URL. http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/redmond/groups/ivm/ice/

Hope this helps!

Hi Gwendolyn,

Have you ever thought about using PhotoDocs? It's included in the Laserfiche Client installation package. PhotoDocs enables you to use a camera instead of a scanner, perfect for those large scale paper maps! To see it in action, you can check out the introduction to PhotoDocs here. You can also check out the support page for PhotoDocs for more information here.
