Question

Nikon NEF

asked on February 18, 2014

I would like to import forensic photos from a Nikon camera.  I need to support 2 image file formats 1). Standard JPG no problem.  2). Nikon NEF raw file format.

My Plan was to use photodocs to import all images, however photodocs does not show NEF files as an option for import.

The client has import agent, however I am trying to standardize input, and they really like photodocs because it will replace the very expensive product they are using now.

Any guidance you could provide would be great.

RAW files are very specific to camera brand and even model, so it's unlikely that PhotoDocs is going to support all of the various formats. It would probably be easier to come up with an import workflow that includes a lightweight conversion application.

Do they have QuickFields? There are a few file converters that can take command line parameters. You could theoretically use the run process activity to convert the NEF file to a JPEG. You'd also want to store the original NEF alongside it though. I'm not completely up on evidentiary rules, but conversion to JPEG without keeping the NEF may constitute an unacceptable modification of the original.
