WebLink View Electronic File Meta Data

asked on February 14, 2014

I cannot see how to view the metadata fields, for electronic files in WebLink.

Using v8.2.2 of WebLink, when 'View Document Options' is set to 'Open Electronic Files with The Associated Application', I cannot see how to view the metadata fields associated with an electronic file.  Under the browse link, you cannot just highlight a file, and see the metadata fields somewhere.  When the file opens, it of course opens in the associated application.

There should be a way to view the metadata fields associated with an electronic file.

When you open a scanned document in the 'standard display', the metadata is shown on the left side of the screen.

If you wish to view the associated metadata, you must be using the "Standard document display" option for "View Document Options". This will open electronic files in the standard WebLink viewer, with the metadata on the left as you mentioned and a link to download the electronic file in the toolbar. If there are scanned pages for the document, they will be displayed; otherwise, an additional link to download the electronic file will be shown in the image pane.

It is also possible to add important metadata fields to the columns of the folder browser view, and display metadata in search results listing.

Thank you for your response.

IMHO the viewing options in WebLink are a far cry from WebAccess.  Having users open an electronic file using the Standard document display, and then as a 2nd step use the link to download the electronic file is not user friendly.  Additionally, WebAccess (and the Windows client), have other differentiators in terms of how to open electronic files.  PDFs can be set to open in the Standard display, as an override to all other electronic file types to open with the native app.  It is very unfortunate that WebLink does not have these other options, to make the user experience better.

Hello,

I have selected "Standard document display" to view the metadata when I am viewing a PDF. I now can open up my PDF and view the metadata, but I cannot view the image. Weblink is on 8.2.2. Has anyone seen this before?

What do you mean by you "cannot view the image"? Do you see the following:

If so, that means that there are no Laserfiche image pages, only an electronic file (in this case, a PDF). See the help files for more information on what that means.

WebLink does not currently provide an embedded PDF viewer, so if you wish to simultaneously view the pages of the document and the metadata, you would need to generate image pages.
