Question

Importing machine metadata from user's machine

asked on February 11, 2014

Has anyone come up with a creative way to capture machine metadata (creation date and modification date) when importing documents into Laserfiche from a local/network drive? The end users would import their own documents from their own machines, and they also need to be able to manually enter field values upon import.

I know Quick Fields has creation date and modification date as tokens, but they are not available via Scanning, direct import from Client, or import from Web Access. If I make the users dump their files on a drive and have Quick Fields pick them up, the users would not be able to enter their own field values.

The creation and modification dates are available as tokens in Scanning.

Yes, my bad for mentioning Scanning. The problem with scanning is that I cannot capture electronic documents. As far as I can tell, there is no way for me to edit the file type list in Universal Capture. Is there a workaround for electronic documents?

I think we may be opting to build a custom import tool.

We thought about making the end users place the documents in a network location, and have Quick Fields Agent import them along with the machine metadata. Then the users could enter other field data from within the repository. The problem with this approach is that the creation date changes when a file is copied, so the date will not be the original creation date.

We've considered similar solutions using Forms and Workflow, but they had the same issue with regards to the creation date.

I think Scanning is exactly what we want except for all document types.
