Question

Working with Excel file (import agent and lf Client Viewer)

asked on February 10, 2014

 Hello

My client uses windows folder drop off folder that users drop their document into.  Laserfiche Import Agent import the file inot Laserfiche to process.

The issue I have one, when I open excel in LF client viewer I don't see any image but I am able to assign template and field values and when I open the file in its native application I don't have field values.  Is this normal?

The second question is, can import agent convert excel or word files into tiff format while importing them?

The idea for my client would be to convert  any type of file into tiff on import.

The Laserfiche Client cannot display MS Office documents in its document viewer. To view the excel file content, you'd have to actually open the document using Excel.

If you open the electronic document from the Laserfiche Client using the native Excel application, you can click on the "Laserfiche" ribbon menu item and then click on "Laserfiche Metadata" to view the template and field information.

Currently, Import Agent cannot generate pages from electronic documents.

What you are seeing is quite normal. For Office documents brought in with their native format you must open them with the native application. So if you right click and open the file you would not see any images, just the metadata as you describe. To answer your second question Import Agent can convert image files such as JPG, GIF and BMP to tiff but not electronic files such as Excel or Word. To create images from these file types you must use Snapshot or some other means to generate images from the electronic document. You can right click on a file or files already in Laserfiche and generate pages to accomplish this. Other than that you would have to something custom using Office tools and the SDK to convert and import.
