Implementing a Laserfiche Forms Server Cluster

asked on February 4, 2014

I see that Laserfiche Forms servers can be clustered using NLB and some specific configuration within Forms. This is documented in the "Laserfiche Forms Install Guide.pdf". At what number of concurrent Forms users does Laserfiche recommend going from a single Laserfiche Forms server to a cluster? I know most of this is contingent upon hardware and network infrastructure but is there anything documented from Laserfiche that would help me make this decision? We currently don't own software that allows us to do our own load/stress testing on our Laserfiche Forms application.

The Forms developers performed some load tests that included a situation when 5000 submissions were sent around the same time.  Their case was slightly different than yours; they used 4 Forms servers connecting to one database with the following specs:

CPU: X5570 @2.93 GHz

RAM: 4 GB (used on one), 2 GB (used on 3)

OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (used with the 4 GB), Windows 7 Enterprise (Used with the 2 GB)

They found that all 5000 submissions were successful and there was minimal delay experienced.  Hopefully this can be used as a metric when making your decision.

Do you have an idea how many users you need to plan for? The reason I ask is because a web application can generally take quite a bit of load before a cluster or load balancing is needed.

For most cases, I'd say that redundancy would come ahead of load on the list of reasons to add resources.

Let's say 3000 users simultaneously completing a public form on a Dell PowerEdge R415 with dual AMD Opteron 4284 processors, 32gb RAM, running Windows 2008 R2 x64 with no other application load.

Rob,

Did they escalate to 4 servers because they were having issues with fewer? Or did they start at 4 servers to begin with?

I believe there was more testing done for single server environments in other test runs, and the cluster testing was performed with 4 servers across the board.  I didn't play an active role in the testing process, so perhaps a Forms Developer may be able to shed more light?
