Question

sharepoint quickfields import

asked on January 30, 2014

Is there a way to import documents from a sharepoint directory into a quickfields session? Whenever I configure a universal capture session, when I go to select a machine to scan from, the sharepoint server only show what I assume are database files as a folder to scan from. I've tried typing the unc file path of the sharepoint library I want to scan from into the menu to lock for images in, and I get a message stating "The search directory you specified does not exist. Would you like to create it."

SharePoint doesn't store its files on disk in a structure mirroring its library system.  It either stores them directly in the SQL database or in an "External Blob Storage" system conceptually similar to a Laserfiche volume.  Neither of these are suitable for pointing Universal Capture at.  You can export them manually like Alex suggests or you can use the SharePoint API to automate that process, but you do have to a copy them out to disk before UC can access them.

Universal Capture is meant to scan documents from the Windows file system. If you have documents in SharePoint, then one option may be to just export those documents to the standard Windows file system so you can use Quick Fields and Universal Capture. Another option is to use the Laserfiche SharePoint Records Center integration where you can send your SharePoint documents directly into the Laserfiche Repository and then from there, use Quick Fields with the Laserfiche Capture Engine to process the documents.

Thanks. I knew there was probably some technical reason behind that, but I didn't know what it was. You just saved me hours of research.
