Feature Request: Option to Gray Out Empty Folders

asked on January 30, 2014

We have a user that has requested a feature for an option to gray out empty folders.

This would be useful when searching through folders for information (and not using the search feature) to know which folders you don't have to go through.

It would also be a useful red flag in case there should have been a document in a specific folder.

I think it would be nice as an option that a user could toggle on/off.

Aileen,

This is a stretch but it might be a workaround in this case.

You can assign templates to folders as well as documents.  Perhaps you could create a template called 'Empty Folder' and set the color of that template to grey.  If you assign the 'Empty Folder' template to a folder then the folder will display as grey instead of the default yellow color.

The obvious downside is that you would have to develop a way to maintain the template assignment automatically.  Maybe some type of recurring workflow that would step through the folder structure and set the folder template based on whether or not the folder was empty?

Aileen,

I gave it a little more thought and you could trigger a 'New Entry' workflow any time an entry is created in LF.  I did a quick test and it appears to work as anticipated.  When a new folder is created in LF it gets assigned the 'Empty Folder' template (which has a grey color assigned to it).  The workflow then gets a reference to that entries parent folder and it removes the template from that folder (because that folder now has an entry in it).

Its a hack but it accomplishes what you were looking for! wink

I attached a screenshot if you are interested.
