Question

Searches take a long time unless Bypass Browse is enabled

asked on January 24, 2014

I have come upon and interesting situation.

A customer is trying to do searches but they are taking a long time (20-45 minutes).

This is happening from all client machines and from the server it self. We have narrowed it down to the Bypass Browse User Privilege. If a user has Bypass Browse, the searches come up in 5-10 seconds (~70,000 results) but if the user does not have Bypass Browse, the searches will go on indefinitely, sometimes they will eventually resolve the results but most of the time nothing will come up. I tried this one a couple of users and got consistent results.

There are no error messages, and I cannot see anything relevant in the Event Viewer.

Here is some general information about their setup:

Server: Windows Server 2003 R2, Service Pack 2, 32bit.

cr.dll: 8.3.1.612

Client: 8.3.1.612

I tried looking through the KB articles, but could not find anything helpful.

The Bypass Browse privilege will definitely make a noticeable difference in search performance. That said, if your searches are taking 20-45 minutes without it, something else may be wrong. There are various methods you can use to troubleshoot. I would start on the hardware side and make sure the machine running SQL Server is beefy enough. If it is being shared between Laserfiche Server and SQL Server, it is a good idea to put SQL on its own box. Once there, you can start monitoring resource usage on the SQL machine at the time searches are being performed, and look into database optimization and maintenance operations such as building indexes for certain tables. We do have a few resources on the Support Site on this topic.

We have been experiencing the same issue where Full Text searches take 30 to 45 min to complete and sometimes just do not seem to ever complete after a hour or more. We are running four Windows 2008 R2 server for our Laserfiche implementation. We have one server for Workflow and Full Text search, one server for SQL, one server as the Laserfcihe Server, and one server for WebAccess and Audit Trail. These all have 12 to 16GB of RAM and don't seem to be out of CPU or Memory when doing Full text searches.

When we were running version 8.3 you could see a site improvement in performance when your turned on By Pass Brower Filter but with version 9.1.1 we are seeing it change the search from 30 to for min to 5 to 10 sec. I do not believe that this is because we don't have our servers turned correctly as the last replay explains. There seems to be more going on than that.

Any other idea??
