Question

Broadcast message to all the logged-in users using Admin Console.

asked on January 24, 2014

Hello Everyone,

I have a suggestion that I would like to make. Its more like a feature request. I remember this specific feature being part of Sage ERP system from my past experience. Within something like admin console that we have in Laserfice, there is a window where we can see all existing connections to the server. I was wondering if we can add a feature that will say something like "Broadcast Message". Using that feature admin user can Broadcast message as a popup screen within Laserfiche to all the currently connected users.

Used case:  When applying any kind of hotfixes/patches/upgrades to the server where we need all the users to be logged out of the system and save their existing work in order not to loose their work. Currently we co-ordinate with their IT and send out an email to the organization saying that users needs to be logged out of the system at specific time. We can instead push that message through Laserfiche 15 minutes before we plan to deactivate the services and make it easier on the customer.

Please let me know if you have any question or concern or if there is already a similar feature that I am not aware of.

Thank you!

Best,

Himanshu

It was using Windows Messaging which was deprecated by Microsoft because it was vulnerable to spam.

I believe this used to be a feature in older versions of Laserfiche. I'm not sure if you could send to all users at the same time, but you could pick one by right clicking on the user in the All Sessions section of the admin console and send a message. I'm not sure why it was removed though.

Hi Miruna,

I agree that it is a threat for spamming and opens up the room with vulnerabilities. So is it safe to assume that it will not be part of future releases?

Thanks!

That's correct. Like Blake said, it was available in early versions of LF 7 and it has not been used in 7 years or so. There is currently no way to broadcast messages to all logged in users from the LF Server.

To clarify, it's not that we pulled it because we were afraid of spam - Microsoft themselves locked down the communication method we were using to do this feature due to general security risks of it. That's why the feature doesn't exist anymore. I believe this was part of XP Service Pack 2.

Would it be possible to implement some sort of other messaging system? This was very useful!
