Question

Volume Compression

asked on January 21, 2014 Show version history

How long does it take to compress a volume with X TB? Is there a performance hit on the server side due to decompression? Also what's the compression ratio?

I'm not sure you would see much benefit to compressing image files anyway - most formats are reasonably compressed already.

I do have a case where we are capturing and storing reports as TXT files from an ERP system.  We have TONS of those files, and raw TXT files compress very nicely.

Instead of using any compression in Laserfiche, we used the Windows folder compression.  (Right click on the volume folder in the filesystem, click Properties, then Advanced, Then "Compress contents to save disk space")

One example volume - around 750,000 files - I see a 1.52:1 compression ratio, which will save us significant space.

Windows handles the compression, Laserfiche doesn't care, and we save on disk space.

Hi Micheal

Just looking for some guidance to size an environment

How much DB growth do you find you get when ingesting Text Files. LF states DB will usually be 10 to 15% of the volume size. As the text files are small and you are likely capturing the text layers for text search and a small amount of Metadata, do you think the DB growth is more in line with the actual size of the text volumes.

We (Laserfiche) removed volume compression from Laserfiche 9.1. Volume compression was really just intended for removable volumes on optical discs, and never achieved very good compression ratios. You should not use the compressed volume feature.
