Why is it only once a year??
Because if we had the conference more often we wouldn't have time to keep developing the products, and then it wouldn't be nearly as cool! 
That said, we also have regional training and user groups running throughout the year, as well as the CPP program - not to mention this site! There are many opportunities to continue being involved with the Laserfiche community.

I see that you are in DC. Do you have a user group?
We have a good group here in VA and you would be welcome to join us.
In early summer (opposite the calendar from Empower) we try to have a mini-conference user group meeting in central Virginia. In 2013 we had 3 or 4 different tracks each with 3 or 4 classes, general sessions, networking time, free lunch, giveaways, and plenty of fun.
If you are interested, let me know. We usually aim for early June.
