Question

Why is scanning hanging up?

asked on January 7, 2014

Hi All:

So I have noticed before, on occasion, users will scan a document and the scanner will hang after a few pages.  Also, not frequently, the scanner would pull all pages through but apparently not scan as no image appeared in LFScan.  Normally in these cases users restart the scan and all is well.

But I fought with one Windows XP machine today that was chronically hanging up during scanning.  On a whim, I disabled the Trend Micro Antivirus agent on the PC and found that scanning works great and didn't ever lock up on me.

Like I said the PC is XP, so it's no spring chicken, so that may be a factor.  Has anyone else had similar experiences.  It's also used by entry level temp workers, so keeping Trend off isn't a good solution.  Does anyone have any ideas on WHAT I can maybe exclude Trend from scanning or an option I can use that might help resolve this?

Thanks in advance.

John

Here are the names of the scan engine EXEs:

  1. ScanConnectClient.exe (ScanConnect)
  2. FileScanClient.exe (Universal Capture)
  3. WIAScanClient.exe (WIA)
  4. LFTwainClient.exe (TWAIN)
  5. LFKofaxClient.exe

They're located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Laserfiche\Batch Processor. For older versions, the file names don't contain the "Client" part.

Other files you should create exceptions for are: BPSessionClient.exe (also in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Laserfiche\Batch Processor), BPOMniOCR82.exe (C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Laserfiche\Batch Processor\BPOmniOCR164) and ThumbnailGenerator.exe (in the Scanning install folder, usually C:\Program Files (x86)\Laserfiche\Client\Scanning\Utilities). For LF 9.1 and higher, the OCR executable is called LFOmniOCR.exe and is located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Laserfiche\Batch Processor\BPOmniOCR185.

You should be able to add specific executables to an exceptions list so they are not scanned. You will probably want to add the lfscan.exe and if you use ScanConnect, the ScanConnect.exe files to that exceptions list. Hope that helps. If your antivirus also has an HTTP checking feature, you may also want to disable that.

Thanks very much both of you for your input.  We will add those exclusions and see how it goes.

Regarding the scan engine *.exe list they names of the engines may be different on the version you are using.  I assume my version is a more recent version from the posts above (2014 vs. 2018) so your list may be as follows:

1. ScanConnectClient91.exe

2. FileScanClient91.exe

3.WIAScanClient91.exe

4.LFTwainClient91.exe

5. LFKofaxClient91.exe

They're located in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Laserfiche\Client\Scanning" folder unlike what was mentioned above.
