Question

Cannot verify SMTP address within Laserfiche 9.0.3 Web Access Configuration

asked on December 20, 2013

I, and two other colleagues, one using the same Laserfiche system as me, but another using a completely different Laserfiche system, have over several months been consistently struggling to get an SMTP Server to successfully verify within Laserfiche Web Access Configuration (http://localhost/laserfiche/configuration/Configuration.aspx).

We have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that all the settings we specify, i.e. SMTP Server, port number, reply address, user name and password are all correct, but we always receive the message “Unable to send e-mail. Please make sure the information is correct”.

The SMTP server addresses we are trying to verify are smtp.office365.com and smtp.outlook.com, depending upon which user/system we are trying it from.

In both instances we have also tried appending the 587 port number to the SMTP address, i.e. we have tried smtp.office365.com:587 and smtp.outlook.com:587, still without success.

We note that the Laserfiche Web Access Configuration page states “This setting only applies to repositories on servers that have the MAPI feature” and that Laserfiche WebHelp at the link below states “Sending e-mail directly through Web Access requires the MAPI license feature for your Laserfiche Server”. However, we cannot see a separate licensing feature that is available within Laserfiche Server Licensing that would provide such a MAPI feature and we would like to rule in or out whether the lack of licensing a Laserfiche Server MAPI feature is what is preventing us successfully verifying a SMPT address within Laserfiche Web Access Configuration.

Has anybody else experienced this problem and therefore can anybody help us resolve this problem?

Many thanks, in anticipation.

hi we fix this issue as per the Follow Summary

For summary: to let the applications that do not support TLS to send email to Office 365, a relay server which can provide TLS is required. The relay server accepts emails from applications through non-TLS connection and relay these emails to Office 365 through TLS connection

Regarding using Office 365 as an SMTP server, note that they only support TLS at this time. The difference between SSL and TLS is in the way the application communicates with the SMTP server that then establishes the secured communication channel. See this page for further details.

As for Laserfiche applications that can connect to an SMTP server, we only have an option to use SSL. So the workaround mentioned by Mazahir Naya, about using a separate relay server, is what you would need to do. Here is the link again to the Office 365 thread which contains the steps on how to set up the relay server.

What licensing model for Laserfiche are you currently using (Rio, Avante, United, or Team)?

We are a VAR so we have a Rio license, but our customer has an Avante license.

You Rio license has the MAPI feature. It's not a separate licensing block, it's a feature in the LFServer license.

Check the Windows Event Viewer on the web server, it might have a more detailed error message. Or, you could try your email setup in Workflow, it should give you a more informative error.

hi any solution regarding the 365 office SMTP ?

I got following error message "The SMTP server requires a secure connection or the client was not authenticated. The server response was: 5.7.1 Client was not authenticated"

I try from Workflow & Web access same error message.

Regards

Mazahir

Same issue here with office 365 and port 587. Nothing on support for a workaround. Really don't want to create a gmail account to get it to work.
