Convert WebLink8 to Top Level Application

I am trying to change the WebLink8 sub-application virtual directory so that it has it's own IIS instance. However, any change to the default web site or if I move the site to a new instance results in the following error:

The main reason this doesn't currently work is because WebLink configuration is done per virtual directory, which allows multiple WebLink applications to publish the contents of different repositories.  When WebLink is not under a virtual directory, it doesn't know what configuration to use.

 

You might be able to use a URL re-writer to insert a virtual directory name into the URL before WebLink sees it, but this might cause WebLink to generate incorrect URLs.

Yes, we can usually remove an IIS web application and create it as an added website.

Why can't this be done with WebLink?
