It's really up to your use case and personal preference.  Standard Mode offers more configuration options and the ability to scan multiple documents at once, so it's great for working with batches of files or for difficult documents that require more control over enhancement options.  Basic Mode is only capable of scanning in a single document at a time, and offers fewer configuration settings.  It's more convenient for one-off jobs, where you just want to get your file into Laserfiche quickly.
