Question

AODA

asked on November 21, 2013

The deadline for proof of compliance with the Ontario AODA Standard is February, 2014. My clients are very concerned that the LF Portal does NOT comply with AODA’s accessibility requirements (http://www.aoda.ca/) and they have less than three months to prove that it does. This issue effects all Public sector organizations in Ontario and all private sector businesses and organizations with more than 20 employees, making it a priority for at least 99% of Laserfiche’s Ontario clients. Other Canadian provinces and U.S. states are working on similar legislation so it should become a top priority for Laserfiche as well. Please confirm of the LF Portal does comply with AODA. If it does, please confirm how it does. If it doesn’t, please confirm how you can make it do so by the end of 2013.Thanks!

Hi Frank,

If I'm reading things correctly, it looks like AODA has just adopted the Web Content Accessibility 2.0 Guidelines.  I know we were previously compliant with WCAG, but I'm not positive that we meet the newest standards.  I'll have the WebLink team take a look at things, and if there are discrepancies, I'm sure we'll work to address them in the next release.

Looking over the guidelines quickly, I didn't see anything that stood out as not being available in WebLink.  Are there specific aspects of the guidelines that your client is concerned about?  As an international company operating in hundreds of different markets, there are a lot of standards and guidelines that we hear about.  If you can let us know what your areas of concern are, that makes it a lot easier to address them.

However, it also appears that this law only affects websites and content published after January 1, 2012.  If their WebLink installation has been around since before that point, the website itself won't be affected by the law.  As for the content, that's created by your client, and we don't have any control over it.  But then, I'm not sure if the law even applies to things like scans of paper documents that are just being made available on the website.  That seems like it would be difficult to enforce and comply with.
