- Can a document under version control be limited?
- Is it limited by default to a certain amount?
- Are there any considerations that need to be taken because of the answers to #1 and #2?
In the next version of workflow there is a "Retrieve Version History" activity that will allow you to retrieve the version number. You will then be able to setup a workflow to automatically copy the document if it hits a specificic version number.
Currently, you cannot limit the number of versions a document can have. When you revert to a previous version, that version becomes a new version on the list. So if you reach a defined limit, that would also prevent reverting to an older version, which can severely hinder usability.
If you give us a detailed use case though, we can consider it for a future release.
There is no practical limit (2 billion) on the number of versions of a doc. Why would you want limit how many versions are created?
Kenneth, the user can make that decision as necessary. When you make a copy of a document, the version history starts over.

Matt,
So I could essentially set up a workflow to create a new file for every 15 versions of a document and/or every 10 work days it creates a new document from the latest version? That is the type of functionality I was hoping to be able to create
Hi,
This is a very interesting question. Please correct me if I'm wrong:
I understand that for versions (e.g. on Microsoft Word documents), Laserfiche keeps a copy of the whole document instead of the difference between the documents. E.g. I have a word document of size 500 Kb. When I modify the document to add a few lines and save, I will get another document of more than 500 Kb. Effectively, the storage space required for this document would more than double.
Limiting versioning will be interesting in this case for IT Managers to control the amount of storage available. Determining how many versions to keep will then be the client's decision.
Regards,
Hi,
Can some one answer Neermal's question above?
That is, where a document 500Kb in size exists within Laserfiche, e.g. a Microsoft Word document, when this document is edited, even if only in a minor way, does Laserfiche create a new version of the document, also 500Kb in size, or does Laserfiche instead only stores the differences between the document and its previous version?
Many thanks.
John.
