Question

Viewing PDF Files in Web Access 9

asked on November 5, 2013

Can PDF files be viewed in Web Access 9 standard viewer if the PDF does not have generated pages?  Opening a PDF using the standard viewer setting displays an empty page.

Our client states that in Web Access 8.3  they were able to open/view PDF files using the viewer, but I was not able to recreate that if the PDF did not have generated pages.

Current PDFs will need to be downloaded before they can be opened in Web Access 9. This functionality has not changed from Web Access 8.3. However, if the PDF has pages generated then they can choose to open the document with "pages" which will open the document inside of Web Access. Additionally, the standard desktop client has an embedded PDF viewer which was avaliable in version 8.3 as well.

The good news is that an embedded PDF viewer is something that the team is currently working on so watch out for that in a future release of Web Access!

Hi Alan, don't suppose you have any ETA on this functionality from the development team ?

Why is there an option to view PDF's in the Laserfiche document viewer? Is this meant to open within the browser at some point?

The option you have circled in your attachment "open PDF files by default using The Laserfiche Document Viewer" is to open pages generated from the PDF in the Laserfiche Document Viewer, not to open the PDF using Web Access (which, as Alan noted, is not currently possible).

Is this feature in WA 9.1? I was really hoping it would be. PDFs are very cumbersome to use with WA. Also, we are trying to use the LF WF fill forms (PDF) more, but we can't use WA to easily review and approve these documents because the users can't see the metadata (for approval) as well as view the document.

I think this should be a priority feature for Web Access.
