Question

Database Backup

asked on May 2, 2013 Show version history

This is the first time I am going through this process of training one of my customers to back up…  I understand how to back up volumes, Quickfields and the Repository Directory. 2 questions though:

  1. Main Database:  Is there anything else I need to consider besides detaching the database before backing that up, then reattaching?
  2. Search Catalog:  Do I need to only stop the services for the search / index back up, then restart after backup?

For the database, I would strongly recommend using the database’s native backup tools or a 3rd party backup software to perform automatic backups, rather than doing them manually. For example, if you’re using a full SQL database, SQL Server Management Studio and SQL Server Maintenance Plan can be used to easily schedule automatic database backups. For more information on backing up the Laserfiche database, both automatically and manually, you can consult page 17 of the Designing a Laserfiche Backup and Recovery Plan whitepaper.

The search catalog can either be backed up manually, by stopping the search/index service and then restarting after backup, or can be backed up automatically using Microsoft’s VSS technology. More information on both options can be found on page 18 of the above mentioned whitepaper.

Have a look at this process, it sets LF to read only state and runs backup of sql as well as files before putting it back into read/write mode, this way atleast users can still access the repository but cannot edit or add files/etc.
