In the case of slow search times, there are a number of factors that could be contributing to reduced performance. I would strongly recommend reading through the whitepaper Improving Laserfiche Search Performance, which goes through troubleshooting potential causes as well as implementing maintenance solutions.

Since you say you’ve already done some work in trying to improve the efficiency of search syntax, I would especially recommend checking the performance of the full-text search index and doing some general system/hardware monitoring to see if there are any obvious bottlenecks occurring (both of these topics and more are detailed in the whitepaper).
