Question

Slow search and document retrieval — Laserfiche 12 (self-hosted)

asked on August 20

Dear Laserfiche Support,

We are experiencing significant slowness when searching and retrieving large volumes of documents in our environment.

Environment

  • Laserfiche 12 (self-hosted)
  • Clients: Laserfiche Web Client and Laserfiche Admin Desktop
  • Laserfiche Server and Laserfiche Database are on separate servers on the same network
  • Hardware: 96 GB RAM; approximately 25 TB total storage
  • Two repositories; one repository is approximately 15 TB

Issue Search and retrieval are very slow when returning large result sets (thousands of documents). Results appear to load in small batches (for example, about 10 documents at a time), with multi-minute delays between batches.

We have monitored both the Laserfiche Server and the database server and have not observed resource bottlenecks that would explain the delay.

Please advise on possible causes and recommended solutions or best practices to improve search and retrieval performance in this configuration.

Thank you,

Hello,

Did this start soon after upgrading to version 12? Or does the timing of the upgrade to version 12 not really coincide with the slowness issue?

First thing I usually look at in cases like this is the state of the repository database, primarily the fragmentation status of the indexes. Ola Hallengren already did the hard work for us, and this IndexOptimize stored procedure almost always solves this problem for me. However, if you already have a good SQL maintenance solution in place, this may not help very much.

Otherwise, it's sort of expected for Laserfiche to take a while to display a ton of documents if you have a lot of columns displayed, too, especially columns like Total Document Size that involve calculations and not just raw data from the repository database. But, if these same searches have always worked in the past and now suddenly don't, the column display may not be relevant.
