Question

Laserfiche API temp working directory continuing to grow in size

asked on April 24

I’m posting on behalf of a client who is reviewing how their Laserfiche API Server handles temporary files. Specifically, we’re looking at the temp directory located at:

C:\ProgramData\Laserfiche\API Server\LFRepositoryAPI\Temp

Currently the folder keeps increasing in size, and they have confirmed that they are closing out the tasks/searches being performed to export data out of Laserfiche.  The client nor myself have been able to find anything definitive, but I have seen some suggestions outside of Laserfiche sources (documentation, answers, etc.) that suggests this needs to be resolved manually or through the scripts being run.

We’re trying to confirm whether the Laserfiche API automatically cleans up this directory as part of its normal operation, or if these files persist unless manually removed. If the API does not handle cleanup on its own, we’d like to know whether the recommended approach is to clear this directory manually or incorporate cleanup logic into the scripts and processes that interact with the API.

If anyone has documentation, best practices, or real‑world experience with how the API manages this temp directory, your insight would be greatly appreciated.

This looks to be a bug on the API Server. We'll have a fix out for it next month.

Hiya!  So we updated to version 2.0.2605.12 yesterday morning around 9:30am central time, and the issue appears to still be occurring.  Files continue to get generated but not cleaned up in the C:\ProgramData\Laserfiche\API Server\LFRepositoryAPI\Temp location.  I don't know how fast it should be cleaning up, but there are still folders/files in that location from 10am-2:30pm when the last set of API calls were made.

In addition, we also noticed that there are large "LFDOCIMGEXP_XXXXX" bin files building up in C:\Windows\Temp on the Laserfiche server that aren't automatically cleaning up either.  Not sure if this is related or not, but it wasn't something that was happening prior to installing the API server that we noticed.

Thanks!

Just wanted to check-in on this because the post said a fix would be out in May and it's now June.  Have there been any updates?

As you noted above, we have released a fix.

A fix for this has been released with API Server 2.0.2605.9. It is available in the Laserfiche installer

The change log notes the issue number and fix:

Fixed issue where the temporary storage folder was not cleaned up properly. (656913)

Files older than 24 hours have a task be deleted that is run once a day, so your comment about API calls from earlier in the day still remaining does not directly indicate that the problem is still occurring.

If you are still experience significant growing file sizes over several days, I recommend opening a support case as it may not the same issue described in this post originally.

I don't know how the cleanup is configured, but I think the issue may have been or be that it isn't cleaning up previous files from before the update.  I did verify that after the update, any files created since the installation of the newer version of the API Server have been getting cleaned up, so I was able to just manually remove the older files.

While I did see the change log, there isn't any explanation in the change log of how the cleanup actually is expected to work, and as I mentioned above it didn't seem to be cleaning up previously created files.  However that is good now after a one-time manual clean at least.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the update, Brandan. In API Server 2.0.2605.9, the new files should be cleaned up within 24 hours.

Hi Brandan,

We released another update to the API Server (2.0.2606.15) that should also address the issue with the files in C:\Windows\Temp.

Regards
