Workflow - Copied a repeat loop that had conditions based on tokens generated inside of it. Broke the workflow

asked on April 13 • Show version history

I copied a repeat loop with all of it's activities and the repeat loop had a condition referencing tokens from activities inside. My instinct was that these references would point to the newly copied activities and not the ones from inside the repeat loop I copied from. However that was not the case, it never updated the references in the condition and so the condition is never returning false and the repeat runs forever.

So I went back to the workflow design and fixed the token reference, then republished over the existing running workflow instances. However if I go to the workflow instance in question and it never updated my token reference in the condition for the repeat function so it is still stuck in an infinite pattern.

So I tried to find an option to bypass the repeat loop manually and I don't see any.

How do I fix this without restarting the entire workflow?

To be even more specific, it does show the new reference in the Workflow tab of the instance when I click on the Repeat 7 activity which was changed from Waitforapproval3 to Waitforapproval6.

But in the conditions tab it is showing the wrong activity and token value still each time I cycle the repeat loop. The conditions tab is not matching what I have configured in the Workflow tab.

It gets even worse; I could not find anywhere to directly modify the token values so I put an activity called temporary fix in to modify the token values as a workaround in the repeat loop and it my repeat loop is repeating still

But it keeps skipping over my new activity.

Hi Chad,

Updating running instance will only update the activities after the running activity.

The repeat loop is a running activity so it cannot be updated although it does show the new reference in the Workflow tab of the instance.

So there is no option to change variable values, skip, or do anything other than restarting the whole workflow?

That is correct. Updating a running instance only applies changes after the currently running activity. In your screenshot, the Repeat is the outermost activity, so anything inside it would not update if you publish changes while the instance has already started the Repeat loop.

Ok so recycling the repeat loop show the new activities and the new condition but does not use it. I am going to have to restart the whole workflow in this case.
