Windows Client - drag & drop from one folder to another automatically opens folder structure

asked on December 19, 2025 Show version history

When I have a folder open and documents showing in the right-hand pane, I want to drag a file to another folder in the Folders pane. When I do that, the target folder automatically opens and shows the sub-folders as soon as I hover over it. This can cause problems if I drop the file too soon, because it then might end up in the wrong folder.

Is there any way to prevent the target folder from opening as soon as I hover over it?

I'm fairly certain you can't change this behaviour but it has caught me and other users out a few times for the same reason you mention. To avoid it though you can use the right click > cut/paste options instead. Or open a new browser window (Ctrl + Shift + B) and expand the target folder prior to dragging and dropping between windows.

Hi Nigel. I usually end up opening another browser window like you mentioned. Thanks for confirming that there isn't a way to change the behavior.

I've encountered a problem with opening another browser window.  The windows client doesn't always recognize that the windows are referencing the same repository.  When that happens the document isn't moved, but is instead downloaded to temp and then uploaded.  You can avoid this by launching the second browser window from the first by using "Open Containing Folder" from a search result.

Oh... I didn't see Nigel's reference to using ctrl-shift-B to open another browser window.  Thanks, that much cleaner.

Also, remember if you do accidentally drop a document in the wrong folder, that ctrl-z will undo the last action.
