Question

Forms Routing Cluster Notification Service Locations

asked on November 5

I am setting up the following Forms environment for NLB and followed this guide in configuring the servers:

  • Forms IIS Server
    • Hosted in DMZ
    • Only running Forms site
    • Forms Routing Service disabled
  • Forms Routing Cluster
    • Primary Forms Routing Server
      • Running primary configured Forms Routing service
    • Secondary Forms Routing Server
      • Running

The question I have that was not very clear was which server(s) should have the Laserfiche Notification Master Service running/disabled and which server(s) should have the Laserfiche Notification Hub Service running/disabled.  As it is not specifically mentioned anywhere to disable any of them, I assume I should leave both services running on all servers but wanted to see what others had found with NLB clustering?

There can only be one (working) Notification Master Service, which should be on the primary Forms server. The primary Forms Routing Service will send notification updates there. There can be multiple Notification Hub Services that connect to the Master Service.

  • Forms IIS Server Hosted in DMZ
    • Notification Hub Service only, connected to Master Service on primary
    • Disable local Master service, since you have to install both together.
  • Forms Routing Cluster
    • Primary Forms Routing Server
      • Run both Notification Hub and Master Services
    • Secondary Forms Routing Server
      • Notification Hub Service only (disable Master), or none. With your specific setup, users will never connect to the Hub Service on this server.

We have this setup sans the DMZ though.  We have both services enabled on all servers and it works.

Thanks Angela, good to know it does work in this configuration.  I forgot to mention that part of my confusion comes from this guide on manually configuring a DMZ Forms IIS server in a two forms server setup that does not have a cluster component.  In it the last step for the "Standard DMZ Configuration: Two Forms Servers, One SQL Server" configuration, it includes stopping/disabling both Notification services on the Forms IIS server in the DMZ

Seems odd that in a non-clustered setup where Forms IIS and Forms Routing are split to two servers, that you would disable these on the IIS server but not with the same setup except the Forms Routing portion is also clustered.

I will say that in our long journey to get this setup, we ran into a few places that were either left out or needed to be updated.  Since we don't use the DMZ I don't have any notes on this one, but hopefully someone else does.

That is perfect, exactly what I needed to know.  Thanks!!!

It would be great if the various white papers that discussing setting up a multi-server Forms environment, a Forms IIS cluster environment, and a Forms Routing Cluster environment could document what services will be running on which machines once configuration is completed.
