Is there a way to search in the repository and only the folders will show?

You can add the "Type" search filter to your search, and uncheck the "Documents" and "Shortcuts" options in the Type pane.

what about subfolders?

If you combine that with the Within Folder search, you can select Subfolders

If the question is that you want subfolders that don't also meet the search criteria to be included in the search results, I don't think there is a way to do that.
