Question

Integration with Adobe FrameMaker

asked one day ago

Hello,

Has anyone ever integrated Laserfiche with Adobe Framemaker?  I'm able to add Frame files to Laserfiche, and when I double click on them they open in Framemaker.  However, I can't make changes and have them save where they are located in the repository.  I feel like this must connect to office integration in some way.

Thanks!

Hi Melissa,

First, welcome to Answers =)

The Laserfiche Microsoft Office Integration is specifically a set of Office "add-ins" that interact with the Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint applications to provide that "Open from/Save to Laserfiche" and other functionality. That integration doesn't and can't interact with any Adobe products.

There isn't an equivalent integration for various Adobe suite products, and one isn't planned. Microsoft provides a convenient add-in/extension architecture for the desktop Office applications (which nearly everyone uses), and even then, building that integration took us a great deal of time and effort to bring up to our standards.

To make changes to an Adobe Frame (.fm or .book) file stored in Laserfiche:

  1. Open it locally, which downloads the file to your computer, then tells Windows to open it in its registered native application (Framemaker)
  2. Make your changes in Framemaker
  3. Save the file locally on your computer
  4. Import the updated file into Laserfiche, and either overwrite the existing (now old) file, or add it as a file new version (if you have versioning enabled)

Hope that helps clarify the expected behavior and how to get your updated Frame files back into Laserfiche.

Hi, @████████

Does Adobe Framemaker open PDFs in read-only mode? If so, please navigate to Tools -> Options... -> View -> Open With -> Open PDF files by default using: the associated application -> uncheck "open files in a read-only state".

If that doesn't solve the problem, I recommend opening a support case.

Hi @Liping Wang,

Thanks for taking the time to reply!  I might be misunderstanding you here, or not using the correct language to explain my case.

The files I'm trying to open are Frame (.fm or .book) files, not pdf's.  I would like to use Laserfiche to store the folders of information required to create our company manuals, including my framemaker files, and have them open from Laserfiche.  Right now I can do this, but the files can't be edited once they open in framemaker, the changes don't save in Laserfiche.

I'm wondering if others have tried to do this or if there is a way to integrate or link the two applications?

Thanks Sam,

That helps clarify things and will save me some time trying to work out something outside of Laserfiche parameters.

Best Regards,

Melissa
