Hi,

We have a client with a particularly large text search catalogue (145GB) who have recently started to use the full text search functionality more frequently. For specific phrases which do not appear in the repository frequently these searches run quickly, typically a few seconds. However, if they combine a template search with a common text search phrase, the searches can take anything from 5-10 mins. Understandably, the users think that by adding specific template/field search criteria along with the text phrase it will speed up the search but I know that the mechanism used by the search engine is to first run a text search across the entire text catalogue and then apply the template/field filter (same for a within folder search).

I have tried limiting the number of indexed search results to 500 but oddly this only seems to work when performing an "AND" text search where I combine two search phrases. If I use a single search phrase it takes around 5/6 mins and returns 1.5 million entries and 5 million hits - is this expected? If I combine this with a template search it returns around 500 hits but still takes over 6 minutes to complete.

I am planning on running an optimisation job using QRCmd.exe but am concerned this may take a considerable amount of time and even then I doubt it will bring about a significant increase in performance. I have toggled the various search options (partial matches & root word variations) and these do make a difference but nothing too dramatic.
