Report Link Variables - Filters and System Variables

asked on January 29 Show version history

Hello Laserfiche people!

So, we're exploring the "Link Variables" feature in Reports.  If you select 2 business processes to link together, from which of the 2 are the system variable values derived?  And, on which of the 2 do the filters apply.  In our case, the first process is status=Completed and the second process will be status=InProgress.  If we filter on status=InProgress, the first process is not even included.  This doesn't make sense.  There is no way, when selecting the linked processes, to indicate which one is being filtered and from which one do the system variable values come from.  Is Reports Link Variables simply a feature that was never finished?

Hi Eric,

The "Link Variables" feature does not have the ability to merge instances across processes. All instances from selected processes would be listed on the report. System variable values are still retrieved from each instance. Link variable can only be created from field variables.

That means, if you filter on status=InProgress, it would show instances in first process with status being InProgress, together with instances in second process with status being InProgress.

Besides, here is an example of how "Link Variables" feature should be used:

Link variable is created binding single line variable across the two processes:

Then on report editor, you can choose to show this link variable, as well as the separated variables:

Then I submitted a new instance in each of the process, filling the Single_Line variable.

The report list would show both instances. The system variable values are different on different instances. While the link variable would show the linked variable values from each process:
