Outlook message attachments in web viewer

asked on October 18, 2024

After uploading a couple of Outlook email message files (.msg), I found that in Web Access they open in an embedded viewer. However, this viewer gives no indication that there are attachments embedded in the email. Am I missing something here?

Ideally, they would be listed and available to open/download. But even without that, there should at least be an obvious indication that there are attachments and that you have to download the email file to get to them.

Upon exploring this feature more--I obviously haven't spent enough time with MSG files in the web client--I see the additional issue that it's basically a text rendering. Meaning, embedded graphics are not displayed. This really isn't ideal as the default display option.

I'd like to add the option for MSG files to just download and not use the viewer. Is there a way to do that but NOT lose the embedded viewer functionality for other document types? The functionality that controls that even causes PDFs to download which will definitely cause worse frustration.

Hey @████████ you have any tips to changing the behavior of MSG files but not other e-docs?

We've asked around a bit and no one has yet been aware of a method of changing just the .msg file hander behavior in Web Client. There are a few already documented user stories/feature requests around improving the email viewer in Web Client. I believe at least one of those deals with embedded attachment visibility.

Yeah, I know I have requested it - being able to a. see whether an attachment exists and b. open the attachment without downloading the email would be a major QOL improvement. so @████████you're not the only one asking for this and it's been requested since at least Oct of 2023. Here's hoping it comes soon with the updated Windows integration later this year!
