Question

lookup query - filling field

asked on October 7, 2024

Hello -

I have a lookup table entered into a field which correlates an address with a parcel id. Is there a way to make the address field limited to just the address within the lookup table -- and restricts typing/entering text into the field? Right now - when typing starts in the field -- an address within our city limits previews in a drop down, but if entering an address that is not in the table, the field will allow for "free typing" which then leaves the "fill parcel ID part of the rule and essentially that field blank.

Is there a way to restrict typing and just utilize the typing and therefore run the lookup rule?

You can use a drop-down field, and they can begin typing in order to only select what is in your lookup.  If you want to leave it as a single line field, you can always create an error message that if the Parcel ID is blank then they entered an incorrect address and they must correct it before continuing.  Essentially use a show/hide field for the message and make the Parcel ID field required to submit.

Thanks! I do already have a drop down list that auto selects what they type -- I did just make the Parcel ID a required field, so thank you for that! I'll work for now, but some parcels that are undeveloped don't have address yet, it'll take a little bit of re working. Thank you!

Hi Megan,

Just to provide some clarity to the discussion, Angela is referring to an actual dropdown type field where you can only choose from a list.

I believe you are referring to the autocomplete/suggestion list that appears for single line fields attached to a lookup, but users can still enter other values.

I'm surprised the drop-down option is allowing them to continue type something that is not in your lookup.  I have only had that happen when I use a single line field to do the lookup.

If you have parcel IDs that are not associated with an Address, you can add an option to the form if the parcel ID does not populate, you could ask another question that allows them to type in a full address in different fields and saves them to your database.  You would need a route that allows for the address to be reviewed and assigned but if its approved just use workflow to add it to the overall bank.
