Cloud - Windows client - connectivity issues

asked on September 10, 2024

Hello,

I have a few Laserfiche Cloud customers in rural areas with less-than-perfect internet service. Periodically, maybe once a week for 20 minutes or so, some of them have issues with using the Windows client to get into their Cloud repository. They'll start getting 787 errors and timeout errors when moving around in the repository or when trying to login. During this time, they can still use the web client - it only seems to be the Windows client with issues. They can still browse to other websites too - it's not like their internet is totally down.

What differences are there between how the Windows client connects to a cloud repository vs connecting to it via the web client? Not having much luck working with their ISP, so hoping I can learn something about this here.

Thanks!

The Laserfiche Windows / Desktop Client uses the Laserfiche Server Objects (LFSO) library for communication with the repository. It's ultimately still sending HTTP requests but uses different underlying system libraries. Those may handle network connection disruptions in different and potentially less resilient ways than a browser with Web Client. I couldn't speak to the specifics offhand.

You could attempt to troubleshoot with a few steps:

  1. Verify the Laserfiche Windows / Desktop Client is on the latest version (good to do anyway).
  2. Enable LFSO tracing when the issue occurs to get more detailed error logs.

That said, I asked internally and was informed by Support that many customers with marginal or spotty internet report similar timeout issues, and there are no configuration adjustments that can be made to mitigate them.

Which leaves you with:

  1. Get better internet.
  2. Use Web Client.

In all seriousness, you might suggest that such customers in rural areas with less-than-perfect internet service look into Starlink internet if it's available to them*. We've anecdotally heard from a number of rural customers that they have much better and more stable internet with Starlink than their previous providers. They'd likely see benefits with other applications as well.

*Not an official Laserfiche company endorsement. Laserfiche has no affiliation with SpaceX/Starlink.
